NEXTies 2011: Presented by Santa Cruz NEXT
Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM (PST)
Santa Cruz, CA
This January 22nd, join Santa Cruz NEXT in celebrating the best that this town has to offer at the Top of the Ritt Transformed once again through the talents of Timerie Gordon of Nielsen Architects and Design Studio, our party starts at 6:00 p.m.
We’ll bring together the area’s best chefs and vintners, showcase local musical talent, Dan P and the Bricks, and honor four Santa Cruzans who are making a huge impact on our quality of life.
So, who won?
- Doron Comerchero: In 2007, Doron founded FOOD WHAT?!, a youth empowerment program which uses food, sustainable agriculture and health as the vehicle for bringing about personal growth and transformation. A project of the nonprofit Life Lab Science Program, FOOD WHAT?! partners with teen youth to grow, cook, eat and distribute healthy, sustainably raised food.
- Analicia Cube: Co-founder of Take Back Santa Cruz (boasting 3,200 Facebook fans). Analicia has lead the group's community clean-up events, ‘Positive Loitering’ gatherings, and lobbied hard to make sure our community is safe and clean. Take Back Santa Cruz aims to empower Santa Cruz residents to get to know their neighbors and keep a watchful eye on our streets.
- Cliff Hodges: After getting his degrees at MIT, Cliff Hodges returned to his home in Santa Cruz to pursue several entrepreneurial endeavors. He’s the founder of Adventure Out, a new kind of outdoor guide service focused on instruction and community. A vehicle to foster environmental stewardship, Adventure Out is one of the earliest members of the 1% For The Planet Alliance. Cliff is also the owner of CrossFit West – the largest CrossFit facility in the Western US.
- Deutron Kebebew: Born in Ethiopia and separated from his family when he was 14 years old, Deutron worked hard at school, played soccer, and graduated from UCSC in 2003 with a degree in electrical engineering. Rather than enter the tech industry, Deutron took a job as a counselor for foster youth at the Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center (SCCCC). In 2006, Deutron was promoted to Program Manager of the Papas/Supporting Father Involvement Program at SCCCC, which studies the impact of positive father involvement and co-parenting on children and families. Deutron continues his advocacy for foster children and teens by serving on the Board of Directors of CASA.
